Myshalae has devoted her academic and professional career to working with and advocating for individuals with physical, intellectual, and emotional disabilities. She has worked as a counselor, vocational coordinator and Assistant Professor of Clinical Mental Health Counseling. The populations she serves include adults, children, teens, families, and individuals. Her areas of expertise include but are not limited to: anxiety, depression, addiction, trauma/PTSD, grief and loss, life transitions, and support for caregivers of individuals with physical/intellectual disabilities and mental health issues. As a parent and caregiver, Myshalae understands the unique needs and struggles of full-time caregivers and the supports they need.
You are the author of your story and can use your unique strengths to work through challenging issues. Myshalae’s counseling approach is individualized and holistic. She believes that the best results come from a non-judgmental and encouraging partnership between client and counselor. She incorporates cognitive behavioral therapy, expressive arts therapy, family systems therapy, feminist therapy, reality therapy, solution-focused therapy, and narrative therapy into counseling sessions along with faith-based therapy if requested. Her goals for all clients are increased self-awareness, personal growth, increased empathy and understanding, healthier relationships and positive change.
Myshalae holds a PhD in Rehabilitation Counseling and Counselor Education and a master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. She is also a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (#00119505) and Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate in the state of North Carolina (#A11464).
Myshalae is originally from Winston-Salem, North Carolina and has one beautiful daughter. She loves spending time with family and friends, watching superhero movies, collecting vintage comic books, and reading science fiction, fantasy, and historical novels.
