Master of Social Work
Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate
Marlee Thomsen began working at Cornerstone Counseling and Wellness in December 2019. Her previous experience includes providing therapy services as the school counselor at The Trilogy School (Raleigh, NC), working as a Registered Behavior Technician using ABA interventions, teaching social skills to middle school students with social learning challenges, counseling college students in a campus counseling center, and counseling adults with co-morbid mental and physical health conditions in a primary care setting. Through these experiences, she has developed a passion for working with children and adolescents who have anxiety, depression, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, and learning disabilities. She finds joy in helping her clients set goals and acquire needed skills to help them deal with their unique challenges. Marlee uses an approach informed by Michelle Garcia Winner's "Social Thinking" curriculum, Zones of Regulation curriculum, Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT), Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). While working with the child, Marlee finds it important to involve parents/caregivers in treatment if and when it is appropriate. Thus, she has a passion for working with parents on enhancing their parenting skills by helping them understand their child’s development and how to more effectively respond to their child’s unique needs and challenges using principles from Conscious Discipline and Discipline that Connects.
Marlee also works with individuals across the lifespan who are experiencing an eating disorder, disordered eating, or body image issues. She enjoys helping individuals improve how they relate to their body, food, and exercise.
As a counselor, Marlee seeks to form a therapeutic relationship with you and/or your child that is built on trust, warmth, and connection.
Marlee has been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate (LCSWA) since August 2019. She received her Master of Social Work from UNC-Chapel Hill in May 2017.
Marlee met her husband, Caleb, while working in the children's ministry at their local church and they have been married since 2017. In her free time, Marlee enjoys being active outdoors, reading, crocheting, cooking, spending time with family and friends, and being part of her church community.
